Two weeks since The Baby Summit. I don't know whether to :( or :) but I am sooo excited to head back next year!
Unless you are friends or family members with a baby photographer you probably have no idea what I am on about! This is how the baby summit came about...
Arguably THE most well known newborn photographer in Australia, the lovely Kelly Brown, decided to have a small retreat in Tweed Heads for 20 photographers to come and learn from a few of the industry's most successful businesses. She pitched the idea to her hubby and best friend and what started as a small fan fare turned into 300 (yes 300!) photographers learning from 17 of the best photographers and industry specialists from Australia and the world!!
Sue is such an amazing photographer of women and inspirational to all who she meets. Sue instilled on me that I need to tell the world who I am and what I do. So...
"I am Emily, a newborn portrait photographer. I charge $490+ for the experience of having your memories of your
families' new life preserved forever."
She often had us all in tears and told us to get out of our own way! She gave me great little tips and tricks for posing self conscious, vulnerable, emotional women so the whole world can see the beauty in them. My job is to overpower the negative voice that we all have and help my client to celebrate what they do like about themselves!
Anya instilled on us that "Faded memories and photographs is all that remains of our existence, an honest representation of who we were". My services as a newborn photographer are not an exchange of $ for products but an exchange in gifts with my clients. The new life in the family is photographed for the purpose of lifelong keepsakes.
Anya also threw a curveball at every photographer in the room. To Anya the connection between the family is so much more important than making sure everyone is perfectly in focus! We also learnt that we all need to chill out about GRAIN in photographs, grain adds character and no one looks at a 24x36 inch canvas so close that their noses are touching the canvas!
Erin is a great business woman. In the live newborn demo she showed us how she poses newborns, her workflow, how she uploads galleries and gave me great tips on lighting and camera angles.
Kirsten reminded me to review my business goals and write the ultimate business goal down, the thing I think will never happen! Just because I think it will never happen does not mean it won't! She told me I need an about me section on my webpage (look out in the next few days!) and told me that I don't have to do what I think the industry standard is for poses and that if I want to do a little lifestyle posing in my session I can! And I will!
Louisa is someone I never thought I would meet. She explained to us that the newborn session is part of the 4th trimester of pregnant. The most important experience for the newborn during our session is that they feel comfortable and womb like. She show me how to wrap more efficiently and to work with the baby during the session. Capture the awake moments so they can be cherished too.
I discovered that Melanie is the photographer I want to be. Her style is very similar to mine and she is an amazing person and photographer. I love her simplicity and that the focus is all on the baby, not on props!
Rachel is a foster mum like me and talking to her was like talking to a friend. She so warm and inviting. I have some new tricks for my bean bag set ups and family posing!
Staying with 10 of my peers and my good friend Haley from Bella Rouge Photography in a lovely home overlooking the river and ocean was great fun. Anything we were talking about was relevant to the life/work balance or technique and skill required to ensure our businesses stay successful.
Apart from amazing speakers and demonstration classes there was great information from a NICU nurse on newborn safety, legal advice from a lawyer. Oh and let's not forget the cocktail party! Mingling with everyone, celebrating life and relaxing!
